‘Styx Gully’ Chardonnay
Our Styx Gully is 100% Mt Barker grown, all from our best blocks of Chardonnay on our Langton vineyard; predominately Block 25, with some from the riper Block 3. A small portion was handpicked and whole bunch pressed, with the balance of the fruit picked at night with low overnight temperatures and processed promptly at the winery. Our Styx is all barrel fermented (36% new for the 2019) with no malolactic fermentation; the result being a complex, but still fruit driven, style of Chardonnay.
The milder season with some rain late in January were conditions that perfectly suited this style of wine, producing a fine Chardonnay that is beautifully restrained and should age very well.
Bright with a light pale straw colour.
Has delicate stone fruit aromas of white nectarine with hints of honeydew melon. There is a fine backbone of oak with a rich nuttiness, in the 2019 Styx we see some lovely, fresh-roasted macadamia nut characters with a hint of Brazil nut.
A very subtle but beautifully flavoured Chardonnay. It has quite a tight palate at this stage with a really fine acidity. It is delicate while still being quite textural and its clean, crisp acidity gives it a good length of flavour. The lees contact post fermentation has contributed to its great palate and the oak has contributed also, but in a very understated way. With its fine and delicate stone fruit flavours the 2019 Styx Gully is delightful drinking now and will certainly continue to improve with further bottle age.
